In recent years, the core issue Configuration Management Database (CMDB) as per ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) has increasingly become the central task for IT organization.

The standard templates (standard process definitions) and the conceptional data model used by AixBOMS are geared to ITIL to support the core IT processes. Here it is worth giving special mention to the key areas configuration and change management with the corresponding relationships to the surrounding service and support processes.

The method

The methodical approach for elaborating the models described above in close cooperation with our customers is based on so-called Use-Case-Analysis. Originally intended as interview method, it has been modified today to such an extent that when used in workshops, it produces the required results within one to two days. This leads to an analysis model (frequently still a rough specification) which we discuss and correct with our customers for subsequent use as a basis for the design specification.

A special challenge:

The aim is to systematize the requirements from the various requisitioners according to different requirement areas in order to facilitate consistent queries from the point of view of the production, service and business areas. Our customers profit here from the experience we have gained in numerous projects. In addition, objectives can be checked in order to develop optimization proposals. The aims can include among others:

  • Minimizing the number of interfaces
  • Minimizing the number of media breaks
  • ...

Consideration of the various parties
This can be illustrated more clearly by the following example from process design. Design specifications are basically shown in the system as early as possible along the lines of rapid prototyping, to allow for optimum discussion and appraisal of the results.
